The Babies

The babies’ deaths strip my eyes,

naked they cry

Ripped of all its poverty,

my own hunger dies

I’ve starved for affection,

starved for love and peace on earth

but I’ve never starved forever,

starved to death, or starved to birth

The truth could feed our nation,

would it only eat

but it’s rough to swallow

such tough and tasteless meat

The truth of all our gluttony,

our wars, and pride

The truth that because of you and me,

children of the world have died

Our obesity protects us,

insulating out hearts

from the truth that we could easily

be the next to starve

As these babes claw through my soul,

I crawl away ashamed

to hide my blame behind the miles

that separate our lives

I’ve starved for affection,

starved for love and peace on earth

but I’ve never starved forever,

starved to death, or starved to birth
